The Need for Reading Services

The reports are shocking! Students are not getting what they need to become proficient readers. A study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics reported that in 2011 66% of 8th graders in Wisconsin fell below a proficient level in reading. The same organization states that “reading is one of the most important skills that young people can acquire and develop throughout their lives”.

The most important lesson students can learn from the Coulee Reading Center is that reading is an enjoyable skill that will enrich their lives. Although we focus heavily on improving reading skills, it is equally important for students to embrace reading of their own volition, and discover that they have the ability to become proficient readers. Our approach to teaching is centered around the belief that every student is a unique individual who has a unique style of learning. Students are encouraged to pursue activities of their choice, at a pace that is comfortable to them. Instructors facilitate these decisions with encouragement, reinforcement, and expertise in reading instruction. This relationship alleviates the pressure of rigorous education, and helps students to discover the joy and value of reading on their own.
